Hours worked, minus the break

Add up a work day and the maths gets fiddly fast — times cross the hour, you subtract a lunch break, and you often need the result as a decimal for payroll. This calculator takes a start time, an end time and a break in minutes, and returns the worked time both as hours and minutes and as a decimal number of hours.

Why decimal hours matter

Payroll and invoicing usually use decimal hours, not hours and minutes — so 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5. Getting this conversion wrong is a common source of pay errors. The calculator handles it for you, and even works for overnight shifts where the end time is earlier than the start.

Tips

  • Enter times in 24-hour format, e.g. 09:00 and 17:30.
  • Overnight shifts are handled automatically.
  • Subtract unpaid breaks in the break field.
  • Use the decimal result for timesheets and invoices.
